Rubatano Center
This fall our Zimbabwean marimba music program welcomes two outstanding new teachers who will bring fresh energy, musical expertise, and a deep commitment to building community through music. Their unique experiences, creative teaching styles, and a passion for Zimbabwean marimba will enrich every class, fostering an environment where students learn from one another, grow in confidence, and experience the joy of making music as a team.

Marimba has always been about connections - listening, supporting, and celebrating together - and our expanded teaching team will help create even more opportunities for collaboration, friendship, and shared success. Whether you’re returning to the ensemble or joining us for the first time, every student has an important role in the music. We can’t wait to welcome you into another season filled with rhythm, laughter, learning, and community. Rubatano Center strives to keep exploring new ideas and opportunities for teaching our beloved Shona music to all generations.
Class Structure
Classes will be held inside Rubatano Studio, Room 125, at the South Whidbey Community Center in Langley, WA
Our Safety Protocol
We are on the other side of the pandemic, however, we will still practice not sharing colds, etc.
Wash or sanitize hands upon entry.
Two air purifiers are in place and windows are usually open.
Mallets will be sanitized before class.
Stay home if you feel any symptoms of sickness.
Martha Thom Mafuleni
December 30, 1977 – July 28, 2023
In Loving Memory
Sometimes the light dims in our world, however, knowing and loving Martha, our beacon of light just keeps shining so bright. She left a legacy of pure love, of danceable hope and of beautiful memories that we can all hold near and dear. As we join together to play music, let us collectively fill our hearts with love and honor for our dear friend and sister, Martha Thom Mafuleni. Let us forever hold, tenderly, her beautiful family, Jacob, Abel, Anotidaishe, Byron, Tinotenda, and many other loved ones that are grieving and putting together a life without her. Truly, her spirit is within each of us and this fall session her spirit can guide us as we learn and grow as players and as wonderful members of this sacred community. Zimbabwe is deep within us and we can all let our lights shine in honor of our beloved Martha. In loving memory, let’s dance, sing and play in all of her glory!
